Students can’t learn if they don’t feel safe, and attracting good faculty is only possible if schools can ensure a secure working environment. While extreme cases capture media headlines, schools and universities of all sizes around the world struggle to protect students and staff from bullying, fighting, assaults, accidents, weather emergencies, and more. They are also concerned with protecting school property from vandalism, arson, and theft—much of which occurs outside of regular school hours. From a liability perspective, schools and universities find themselves accountable to students, faculty and visitors to their campus.

  • Why Healthcare Technology is Never a Purchase

It’s a fair bet that no patient has ever gone to their healthcare provider and said, “I need to buy an x-ray” or “I’m shopping for casts.” People go to the emergency room, or make an appointment to see their doctor, because they have a problem. They might be experiencing pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, or another pressing issue. And while ultimately there will be payment for services and products, most medical professionals would never consider their patients to be customers. Rather, patients go to their healthcare provider, the medical expert, to diagnose and advise them of what they need to treat their symptoms, to cure their illness, and solve their problem.

As parents, we’re always seeking to keep our children safe. The world they’re growing up in today is unlike the one we knew. The times have changed, and so have the dangers. But with this change has also come evolving technologies and solutions that can help keep our children safe, even when we’re not there. When appropriately and strategically deployed in schools, physical security solutions could deter bullying, vandalism, acts of violence and even unhealthy and risky behaviors such as vaping (yes, there are now “vape detectors” that can detect nicotine vapor not discerned by smoke detectors).

ScanSource was honored to be part of a wonderful project at the USS Wisconsin Museum in Norfolk, Virginia. Our partners IPConfigure and Axis Communications offered a great deal of support, providing the equipment and manpower to set up cameras and run cables as part of the Museum’s Ship Experience Access Room (SEAR). The SEAR provides a wheelchair accessible room full of large monitors for veterans and their families to get an in-depth look at several areas on board the Battleship USS Wisconsin, many of which are very hard to gain access to. Using pan-tilt-zoom security cameras on the ship and joysticks back in the SEAR, veterans can control the cameras to explore the spaces.
